The Spiritual and Physical Ramifications of Christians Smoking Marijuana

The amount of clients that myself and other Christian counselors have that are smoking pot is shocking. The spiritual ramifications for this are numerous.
A generation ago, marijuana was something many Christians viewed as obviously incompatible with a life devoted to Christ. Today, legalization, changing cultural attitudes, and the belief that "it's natural, so it must be safe" have caused many believers to rethink their position. As a Christian counselor, I have watched this shift happen in real time.
While every person's situation is different—and there are legitimate medical conversations surrounding physician-directed cannabis treatments—this article is addressing the growing recreational use of marijuana among Christians. It is also written from the perspective of biblical discipleship rather than politics or criminal law.
The question is not simply, "Is marijuana legal?"
The question is, "Does it draw me closer to Christ?"
Our Minds Are Meant to Be Sober
One of the clearest themes throughout Scripture is the importance of spiritual alertness.
"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."
—1 Peter 5:8
Peter was not merely talking about alcohol. He was describing a lifestyle of mental clarity and spiritual vigilance.
Throughout the New Testament we repeatedly see believers instructed to be:
Sober-minded
Self-controlled
Alert
Disciplined
Ready for prayer
Able to discern truth from deception
Recreational marijuana intentionally alters perception, slows reaction time, affects judgment, and changes one's state of consciousness. Those effects stand in tension with the biblical call toward watchfulness.
